My Telephone Boyfriend (Part 1)

Say what?! Word up! In February of this year, I acquired a new boyfriend. He was my man over the wire. What is a telephone boyfriend you ask? But for the fact that it is my life experience, I could not answer, but here we go.

Background
I met my telephone boyfriend over the phone one Friday morning in February 2008. As it turned out, he was attempting to call a co-worker to be sure that she was awake in time to make it to work. I thought that it was some dude who got thrown by some chick who gave him a wrong phone number (personally, been there, done that). You know how it is...I figured that he was out the night before, chatted some Chicky up and she gave him "her phone number." Wink, wink. Well, when he called at 6 o'clock that morning, I could not help but to wonder about this very pleasant sounding man. So, what did I do? When I got home from work that evening, I called him! Yup, that's what caller i.d. can do for you. I left him a voice mail message saying that I hoped that he was able to get in touch with whomever he was attempting to reach earlier in the day because he sounded like such a nice man, I would hate for him to be disappointed.

Well, he called me back that evening and we spoke for a good three (3), count them three hours! What a great dude! He is very smart, well-rounded, funny, witty and (best of all for me) gets all of my obscure references - whether they be about an old television show, old lines that we used to say back in the day, whatever. By nature of his birthspot, he even used to watch All My Children and Ryan's Hope. He remembered that Tichina Arnold was on Ryan's Hope - I didn't. (Did I mention that I am watching Ryan's Hope on SoapNet?) This has been some of the best phone time that I have ever logged.

Many of my friends know that I can break out into song at the drop of a hat. (Qualified, that is if the lyrics fit the discussion.) Get this...I have sung more lines than. Let's just put it this way - I can sing, but can't carry a tune, and it doesn't bother me one bit to break out in song when speaking with my Telephone Boyfriend. He has done it a few times himself.

We spent our time through last Saturday night (May 17th)on the phone. What an experience! We had marathon conversations that have lasted as long as five hours. I thoroughly enjoy chatting with him. Can I tell you how cool it is to be able to talk, just talk about everything? There is a certain freedom that comes with the quasi-anonymity of the person on the other end.

But don't get me wrong. It ain't true anonymity. We each know the other's family histories, personal skeletons and more important, each other's passions. He LOVES, LOVES, LOVES his family, and is especially close to them. There have only been three weekends since we have "known" each other when he didn't have his niece and nephews visiting from out of town. I met via telephone his darling niece, her mom, and her brother; one of his sons; a friend from work; one of his sisters and his mother! For my part, I have only exposed him to Sonya - I always underestimate folks no matter what type of armor they come with, and spare them Harriette for as long as possible.

Some of what happens when you meet someone brand spanking new is that you can become open to subjects that you might have never seriously considered before. For me, it is soccer. Yes, that's right, "Bend it Like Beckham" soccer! I spent a Sunday morning on the phone watching a match with him. He taught me many of the rules of the game, and it was a lot of fun to share something that another person is so fanatical about. Hey, he even got me off of my one woman boycott of the NBA!

For his part, when we started talking, he was very firm in his negative opinion of politics, or "politricks," as he calls it. Now, he has begun to follow the 2008 Presidential primaries like a CHAMP! Imagine my surprise when he was watching CNN and told me about the delegate count for Obama. When I was on the phone with him and just learned that John Edwards was endorsing Obama,he said "I knew that." My response was "No, he is doing it this evening, the endorsement." To that he replied, "I told you that he was going to do that last week. I could tell by the way that he was talking." WOW.

That's all that you folks can take right now, so I will leave you with this for a start. Notice that this post is titled "My Telephone Boyfreind (Part 1)" - that means that there is Moore to come!
